The first time I took a trip to Lombok, Indonesia the road to Kuta was little more than a muddy track. I remember bumping down the road to be finally greeted by a view of the golden sandy beach of Kuta curved like a crescent moon along the edge of the bay. I was excited and looking forward to ticking off my list of places to visit in Lombok.
Lombok has changed a lot since the first time I visited it. The island has a working international airport and good transportation infrastructure making it easier than ever to take a holiday in Lombok. This is a great thing for travellers, because Lombok is one of the most beautiful islands in Indonesia. To help you make the most of your holiday in Lombok, here is a list of the 15 best things to do in Lombok (and I’m not going to include the Gili Islands). The list includes some of the islands beautiful beaches, Rinjani Volcano and roaring waterfalls. Let’s get started.
1. Ashtari Kuta
Ashtari, Kuta has to be one of my favorite places on Lombok. The café has tasty food and drinks, but it’s the views that make Ashtari so memorable. The café is located on the hill overlooking the bay and offers panoramic views of Kuta, Lombok. Make sure to visit in the late afternoon, chill out on the outside patio with beanbags and just enjoy the view. I promise you’ll love it.
2. Climb Mount Rinjani
Hiking Mount Rinjani is one of the most famous things to do in Lombok. Most tourists take the three-day two-night trek to climb Mount Rinjani. From the top of Rinjani you have almost panoramic views over the island and can see as far away as Mount Agung on Bali. I’ve climbed Mount Rinjani once before and I definitely this as one of the best places to visit in Lombok.
3. Chill on Selong Belanak Beach
If you are looking for things to do in Lombok then you have to visit the beaches. One of the best beaches in Lombok is Selong Belanak Beach, which is located in the South of Lombok. It’s a beautiful beach located in a crescent bay with a sandy floor. Small stalls line the edge of the beach where you can buy fresh coconuts and even rent a surfboard. This is one of my favorite places to relax and unwind on a Lombok holiday.
4. Tiu Kelep Waterfall
In the hills of Lombok you can find a lot of waterfalls. One of the most famous waterfalls in Lombok is Tiu Kelep Waterfall, which is located in the North of the island. The setting is beautiful, with lush tropical jungle surrounding the falls. You can find a useful guide on visiting Tiu Kelep Waterfall on Jones Around the World.
5. Beleq Village
If you’re interested in Lombok culture you should visit Beleq Village. The village dates back to the 14th century and is composed of 7 traditional houses, 2 Berugak (gazebos) and a village hall. The village hasn’t grown since it was founded, because the people who live their believe that every new generation should move out of the village and start their life in a different place. The area around the village is nice for Lombok trekking.
